A weblog covering the San Diego Padres.

Well... I partied a little too hard last night and wasn't in a great condition for much of today.

I did manage to catch the Derby, and it was a muddy one. Favorite Smarty Jones won on a terrific ride from jock Stewart Elliot. I wish I had read up more on all the horses, because it was an intriguing field.

The race itself wasn't so hot, basically just a big pack until that last turn when Lion Heart took a lead and was headed for the roses when Smarty Jones roared out of the pack, taunted with a brief neck and neck, then toasted the show-horse. Jones could be a super horse, but I've thought that almost every year the last five or so about the Derby winner.

I'm still enamored with War Emblem, a beautiful sprinter from two years ago.

Jones also earned a $5 million bonus for winning the Derby and two other races and remains undefeated at 7-0 heading into the Preakness. Gotta love horse racing!

And for Padres news, they had a nice comeback win last night, surviving Brian Lawrence's shaky first to overwhelm Mets young gun Tyler Yates. They now have a nifty 15-9 record.
